Ed Sheeran Reveals He Wrote 25 Songs During Hiatus

In recent news, Ed Sheeran has revealed that he penned down no less than 25 songs in a week during his prolific hiatus.

The 30-year-old had taken some time off to spend some much-needed quality time with Lyra, his baby daughter, who was born in September of 2020. He shares his several months old child with Cherry Seaborn, his wife.

The Perfect hitmaker has announced that even on his hiatus, he did not stop working on new music. He revealed that he was able to write songs for at least two albums during his time away from the spotlight. Ed was quoted to have said that he wrote around 250 songs, out of which, 50 were ballads.

Talking about his writing process, the popstar recalled how he would write at least 25 songs in a week. Then, he would choose one which seemed okay to him and would add it to the ‘maybe’ list.

It was also rumored that during his break from the spotlight, the superstar also got together with Sir Elton John to have some one-on-one songwriting sessions. It is no secret that the two are good friends and have connected time and time again to work on music together, as they share a mutual love for it. The Grammy-winner previously also stated how much he enjoys working with Sir Elton John and that the songs they pen down together have a special place in his heart.

Ed Sheeran’s fifth and latest studio album, likely to be called ‘Subtract’, is all set to be released later in this year. He also added that Kylie Minogue is a part of one of the songs in the album, named Visiting Hours.

The pop pair decided to team up for the track after the two connected in March. Ed had flown out to Australia to perform at the memorial service for his friend, Michael Gudinski, a music executive, who had just passed away.

The Shape of You hitmaker was joined by Kylie on stage and the two together sang renditions of ‘The Locomotion’ and ‘All the Lovers’. Ed also went on to perform Visiting Hours, which he had previously penned down to pay his respects to his deceased friend.

The moving song will also include vocals, courtesy of Jimmy Barnes, and will be featured on his soon-to-be-released studio album. The singer revealed that both Kylie and Jimmy will be singing backing vocals on the song. He added that these two people were musically important to Michael and therefore, it seemed fitting to feature them in a track that was written to pay tribute to him.

The singer recalled how he had simply been hanging out with Jimmy and Kylie after just being on stage with the latter and told them that they had to be a part of it. Once he returned to England, he recorded it right away and sent it to them.

He also talked about how he would often send Michael songs for Jimmy because he asked for them. Ed said that his executive friend had always wanted him to sing with Kylie too, and he had been able to do that at Michael’s memorial.
