Madonna critiqued for uploading video of son dancing to memorialize George Floyd

In recent news, Madonna posted a video of her David Banda, her son, dancing to They Don’t Care About Us by Michael Jackson. The video was posted to memorialize the death of the African-American man, George Floyd.

After the unfortunate incident that led to the death of the 46-year-old, a video was released that showed him being pinned to the ground. The victim was in cuffs and unarmed as a police officer knelt on his neck. Floyd’s breathing was cut off on Monday night in the hospital. Once people saw the video, they were outraged and called for action against the cops involved in the tragedy. Various celebrities also took a stand and publicly voiced their frustrations on the incident. Rihanna, Cardi B, Reese Witherspoon, Lady Gaga, Ice Cube and others spoke out against the existing police brutality in the U.S.

Madonna too decided to express her concern for the shocking incident by weighing in on Thursday. She shared a clip online of her 14-year-old son, David Banda busting a couple of moves to the Michael Jackson tune released in 1995.

The superstar posted that as brutal murders take place along the globe, her son dances on They Don’t Care About Us to honor George Floyd and his loved ones. She stated that it was a gesture to protest against all acts of discrimination and racism that are a normal occurrence in America. She declared that she too supports the fight against police brutality in the country. Madonna added hashtags as well such as #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd, #MichaelJackson, and #DavidBanda.

However, people did not appreciate the hitmaker’s tweet. Thousands of sarcastic messages appeared on her video where social media users deemed her video to be promoting an ‘off message’.

One person sarcastically thanked the superstar for eradicating racism and her efforts that led to it. Another commented that they appreciated her son’s attempts at dancing racism away from the U.S. A third tweet showed a person’s gratitude stating that they were grateful Madonna’s son was able to ‘stomp’ out racism through a ‘deeply moving’ tribute that included him dancing. The user went on to say that they were overwhelmed by her sacrifice and hard work and did not know how to repay her.

Even Rex Chapman, an ex-basketball player stated that Madonna’s video was the worst tweet of all time. He also added that her son dancing to a song as a tribute to Floyd and the tragic incident was a weird approach. In his opinion, it was also disrespectful to Michael Jackson and in general, as well.

But, the 61-year-old has not yet commented on the backlash she has faced.
