Melanie Brown is Going to Broadway

Melanie Brown, the British pop star, is heading to jail. She will be starring in a hit Broadway music Chicago and will be spending New Year’s Eve in New York. The former Spice Girls star will have to tackle the role of Roxie Hart, a convicted killer for an eight week run, beginning from December 28th. She will be entertaining the audiences till February 19th at the Ambassador Theatre.

Also known as Scary Spice, Brown is following in the footsteps of previous leads Ashlee Simpson, Brandy Norwood, Marilu Henner, Rumer Willis and Christie Brinkley. All of these have portrayed the role of nightclub dancer, Roxie Hart who murders her lover onstage after he threatens to leave her. The role is currently occupied on Broadway by Disney Channel’s Veronica Dunne, but she is leaving the show after 27th November. The production also features Jason Danieley as Billy Flynn, Lana Gordon as Velma Kelly and Natasha Yvette in the role of Matron ‘Mama’ Morton.

This new gig marks the return of Melanie Brown to the Broadway stage after 12 years. She had first made her debut in April of 2004 in the original production of Rent, when she took on her first role of Mimi. The year 2017 is going to be a busy one for the star as she will be going on the road with former Spice Girls bandmates Emma Bunton and Geri Horner. They regrouped earlier this year as GEM after a plan of reuniting the full girl power group for a 20th anniversary celebration didn’t work out.
