Miley Cyrus and Flaming Lips Collaborating

The weird sonic friendship between Miley Cyrus and The Flaming Lips continues in the form of an upcoming collaborative LP. The pop star and the psychedelic rock band co-wrote the seven-track album last year and Lips members Steven Drozd and Wayne Coyne are currently mixing them. About the set Coyne was of the opinion that Miley Cyrus does pop really well so it feels like pop, but is actually a truer and sadder version of it. He said that some of it reminded him of Portishead and Pink Floyd.

It was in early 2014 that the unlikely partnership took hold when being a huge Lips fan, Cyrus tweeted a birthday greeting to Wayne Coyne. The front man responded by sending his phone number to the pop star, leading to the realization that they both shared a surreal approach to life and art. Coyne said that they had been getting into each other’s world, which meant that they text daily, between three to thousand times.

Miley’s commitment to music has impressed Coyne, which was recorded and written in Cyrus’s Los Angeles abode and the band’s studio. The Lips singer said that her studio is small and comprises of a desk where she was mixing. He couldn’t imagine Beyonce doing it, which wasn’t a putdown, but came as a surprise as far as Cyrus is concerned.

No release date has been given for the yet untitled album, but is one of the latest collaborations between the group and the singer. Cyrus appeared in their video and also added vocals to the band’s Beatles covers.
